Hela 'va good Figure

After seeing the final sculpt for the last figurine of the THE CLASSIC MARVEL FIGURINE COLLECTION, and how brilliant it looks, I was feeling creative.

Ok, I was too tired to do any commissions so thought this would be easier just to get something creative done before bed. Anyway, this is an alternate costume for Hela. I didn't go all out modifying the costume properly, so its more of just a digital repaint.

Skurge II

THE CLASSIC MARVEL FIGURINE COLLECTION: Skurge early stage
After seeing some fantastic quick renders of the character, most of us on the blog thought it didn't look very dynamic and I thought there didn't feel like enough power in the stance. So I changed it up with him leaning on his axe, and lowered his face to make his glare look more intimidating. I also flared out the shoulder pads more and filled in other details.

Dog Days are Over

Ok, this is my last Lockjaw post.
I was unhappy with my previous efforts. While I did settle on one I liked, it just looked like a dog.

So after a lil inspiration, I wanted to explore Lockjaw using his teleporting powers. I never thought a standing dog would be dynamic either, but slicing him in half mid teleport, adding some Kirby Krackle, I think its much more unique at displaying the character. It can never be confused with 'just a dog' now.

And if EM want to push the budget out, they could make a back separate and then he could make a nice bookend.

Old Dog New Tricks

Edited the Lockjaw drawings during my lunchbreak, changed to a sad face and a more cheeky face since making him angry looking seemed a touch out of character, probably looked too evil.

Barking Mad

I was sort of challenged to do some designs of what a Lockjaw special would look like for the Classic Marvel Figurine Collection. I looked at images of bulldogs, figurines, and Lockjaw artwork and just mixed them all together to get different results.

Essentially I just wanted him sitting down. He isn't exactly a dynamic character and the breed of dog (I know technically he ain't a dog) doesn't lend itself greatly to dynamic poses. I felt the more dynamic it is, the more bigger the risk of it looking weird. The main selling point in this figurine is the character, basically his unique design in the face, and whatever expression you can get out of it. I also think you can get a better scale of the character in this pose as he will sit up taller than what he would be standing.

I think I sort of failed in a way because they don't really work, the majority just look like a dog. However, I did colour in my favourite (not the churchill parody) that I think worked really well which sort of combined two pieces of artwork of Lockjaw.

Wiccan Edit

After another great update at the Classic Marvel Figurine Collection blog, we were presented with an excellent sculpt of Wiccan.

THE CLASSIC MARVEL FIGURINE COLLECTION: Day in the life of a CMFC drone...

A few of the bloggers there, myself included, thought he looked alot older than the teen in the comics.

So I broke down the sculpt, tracing it to get the contours, then worked on making the face younger. What makes the sculpt feel old is the large ears, longer than the nose, which is unusual. Also the square, long jaw line is also very mature and macho looking, while Wiccan is often portrayed as young, quite soft, feminine like features.

So narrowing his face and softening his jawline made him look younger, but it didnt look in proportion with his body now. So I looked into what made him look older. Again, he was very muscular, thick legs and arms and long in the torso and pelvis. So I made more changes to make his body look more fragile, like a teenager, yet to pile on the muscle of a filly grown hero.

Overall these are drastic changes that I cannot see happening, but I just wanted to see what I could do to change the sculpt into making it feel more like the character. I still feel the sculpt is really well done, but just wanted the drawing exercise really.

SpiderMan 2099 Edit

Another edit of a figurine from the Classic Marvel Figurine Collection, this time looking at the new Spider-Man 2099 sculpt.

I was disappointed in the sculpt after seeing so many promising and dynamic sketches of the pose, I think the sculptor really missed the mark nailing the pose in 3D. Instead it is rather undynamic and rather awkward looking. I made some quick adjustments to match the sketch more and think it is an improvement. Although it is probably way too late to change, just wanted to show that someone needs to keep a keener eye on the quality and direction from design to sculpt.

Terrax Edit

So, over at the Classic Marvel Figurine Collection blog, I offered some pointed in which I thought the Terrax sculpt could be improved slightly, but with most people being impressed with the sculpt my opinions fell on deaf ears. Maybe its me being picky, as it is a lovely sculpt and style of it, I just had a few issues, mainly that I thought the pose felt too stiff.

My suggestions were slight bends in the elbows, a little rotation in the forearms and wrists and tilting the head down to face the viewer more directly. It does seem like a little pretentious or picky that I know better, and it was suggestion I sketch up what I thought.

I think I did better. I just edited the pictures provided, so it gives a better idea of what the figurine would look like. And because I apparently got too much time on my hands, I stupidly coloured over it too.

But I hope the bend in the arms are more clear, and his fist and wrist twisted gives a better gesture than before. While he stills has a slight tilt of the head to reflect his angry gesture, he is no longer looking into the heavens cursing god. This guy should be towering above others and shouldnt need to be gesturing upwards. I debated changing the way the axe looked and considered rotating that, but I thought it gives a clear silhouette like this and left it.

So...now that I can see this version looks better, hopefully others agree, EM take note and make the little tweaks needed to make the best figurine possible.

Hey, it may be picky, but I am spending money on this thing.

Longshot

Saw some nice pose sketches on the Classic Marvel Figurine Collection blog of this character Longshot. http://marvel-figurines.blogspot.com/2011/08/just-quickie.html I felt this pose would make the best figurine, but the company went with a different pose. I thought I would draw up the thumbnail in detail to try and win them over.

CMFC - Frankenstein Results

Spent ages on this and was surprised it got guessed correctly so quickly after post it on the blog. Curse you Mighty_Marvel! Although it was satisfying to see Victor incorrectly guess on some of the characters. To confirm, the 10 characters I mixed up were:

Headdress - Enchantress
Head - Shang Chi
Front Cape - Nomad
Torse - Mephisto
Left Arm - She Hulk
Right Arm - Wonder Man
Legs - Adam Warlock
Boots - Radioactive Man
Back Cape - Beta Ray Bill
Sword - Baron Zemo

I hope EM makes it just as hard as I tried too, because it MM can guess mine THAT quickly, I don't fancy my chances winning the contest myself.

CMFC - Frankenstein

Someone suggested a fun game to play on the Classic Marvel Figurine Collection blog about creating a collage from figurines in the collection and everyone has to guess what parts went into making the figure.

In colour I thought it was too easy, so i made it black and white and will reveal the coloured version if anyone guesses right, or just gets stuck. Made up from 10 characters.

Nico Minoru

Something for the Classic Marvel Figurine Collection blog. After seeing a proposed sculpt of Nico Minoru, a few of the members thought it didnt quite look right with her wearing a long jacket, especially seeing a sketch of the costume she should be wearing. So I sketched up what she would look like without the coat, added her manga like hair, and widened her legs to give her a better stance. Just felt like I had to do it.

Great Odin's Raven!

The folks over at the Classic Marvel Figurine Collection posted an amazing preview sculpt of the upcoming Odin special. Check it out, its a gorgeous sculpt.

Inspired, and also bored, I played around in photoshop slapping some colours on top of the preview pictures to rough up what the figurine could look like painted. I think it looks pretty sweet, and makes me want the figurine even more.

Damn August/September wait.

167 - J. Jonah Jameson

After my Pyro concept, I was asked to design a J Jonah Jameson figurine at the Classic Marvel Figurine Collection blog. My design is practically the excellent Bowen bust that pretty much summed up what was asked for of the figurine, but I took liberties on the stance and the head as well as colours.

162 - Pyro

CMFC posted an update of their sculpt on Pyro which I thought looked truly horrible. So with someone suggesting to use Bowen designs bust as a base, I designed a figurine based on that pose but keeping the same costume, which I also dont like but Marvel approved of. Personally I think it looks like Borat's mankini. Also did an alternate pose, either of these I would prefer over what they did, which hopefully can change their minds.
